Our purpose at Anglo American is to re-imagine mining to improve people’s lives and we are doing that right here in North Yorkshire and Teesside - helping to make a positive difference locally and in the world for decades to come. We are constructing the Woodsmith Project with long term sustainability at its core and our polyhalite product, a unique, multi-nutrient natural mineral, will help to feed the world. 

The Woodsmith Project has continued to deliver significant benefits for the region throughout 2023, including:

1,400

There are now 1,400 local people working on the Woodsmith Project.

As well as bringing new specialist skills to the region, which we need to operate the state-of-the-art technology we’re using to safely sink our deep shafts and drive our 37km tunnel, we are providing opportunities to 1,400 people from the local area in our total project workforce of 2,000.

£305 million

In 2023, we contributed £305 million to the regional economy.

We spent £143 million sourcing goods and services from businesses in the region helping to safeguard and create more jobs. Since construction started in 2017, the Woodsmith Project has generated an additional £1.5 billion to the economy of Yorkshire and the North-East. 

Achieve launched

We passionately believe that all children should be equipped to achieve their potential.

In 2023 we launched Achieve, our ambitious education programme that will help equip young people to achieve their potential.
