Searching for the next generation of cyber superheroes

14 October, 2022

Anglo American is searching for its next group of Cyber Security Apprentices to help protect the mining company’s global operations.

Anglo American is searching for its next group of Cyber Security Apprentices to help protect the mining company’s global operations.

Based at a purpose-built, state-of-the-art cyber classroom in Scarborough, the seven successful candidates will receive expert tuition, whilst being mentored by Anglo American’s cyber specialists from across the globe.

The new starters are part of Anglo American’s wider strategy to help establish a Cyber Security Cluster on the North Yorkshire coast that has seen the UK-headquartered company invest £97,000 in conjunction with Scarborough Borough Council and a host of other partners.

The new apprentices will join Anglo American’s 7 existing cyber apprentices in October 2023, taking the total number of cyber apprentices based at the Woodsmith Project to 14.

“Anglo American has a sophisticated digital infrastructure that needs to be protected from a range of cyber threats, which continue to grow year on year,” said Craig McEwen, Chief Information Security Officer at Anglo American.

“This apprenticeship programme is a fantastic opportunity for young people in the region. It will be a challenging course for the candidates who will be operating at a high level, dealing with complex and fast-moving problems, but they will be mentored by a world class team from across the globe who will help ensure each apprentice has every opportunity to succeed.

“We’re looking for people with inquisitive minds, a good work ethic and an ability to commit themselves to the programme.”

Apprenticeship Delivery Specialist, Emily Fraser, added: “Our decision to locate the cyber security apprenticeship programme in North Yorkshire demonstrates our continued commitment to helping establish a cyber cluster in the area.”

To be eligible to apply for the apprenticeship, candidates must be 18 or over by the end of the summer holidays in 2023, have at least three A Levels or level three equivalent and five GCSEs at grade C/4 or above, including Maths and English (or an equivalent qualification).

Candidates must also not hold any other Level 4 (or above) qualifications in the cyber discipline.

An information event is being held at the Anglo American office in Scarborough on Thursday 20th October. For more information on this, the cyber apprenticeship scheme and how to apply, visit: https://recsite.typeform.com/to/n6biPuz0?typeform-source=uk.angloamerican.com

Applications close January 4, 2023.

Notes to editors:

Anglo American is a leading global mining company and our products are the essential ingredients in almost every aspect of modern life. Our portfolio of world-class competitive operations, with a broad range of future development options, provides many of the future-enabling metals and minerals for a cleaner, greener, more sustainable world and that meet the fast growing every day demands of billions of consumers.

With our people at the heart of our business, we use innovative practices and the latest technologies to discover new resources and to mine, process, move and market our products to our customers – safely and sustainably.

As a responsible producer of diamonds (through De Beers), copper, platinum group metals, premium quality iron ore and metallurgical coal for steelmaking, and nickel – with crop nutrients in development – we are committed to being carbon neutral across our operations by 2040.

More broadly, our Sustainable Mining Plan commits us to a series of stretching goals to ensure we work towards a healthy environment, creating thriving communities and building trust as a corporate leader. We work together with our business partners and diverse stakeholders to unlock enduring value from precious natural resources for the benefit of the communities and countries in which we operate, for society as a whole, and for our shareholders. Anglo American is re-imagining mining to improve people’s lives.

The Woodsmith Project involves digging two 1 mile deep mine shafts at Woodsmith Mine near the village of Sneaton near Whitby, and a 23 mile transportation tunnel to a processing facility and port on Teesside. In a world first, most of the surface infrastructure at Woodsmith Mine is being built underground and the site landscaped to minimise the visual impact on the surrounding countryside. It will mine a giant deposit of the mineral polyhalite, which will be sold as a natural, low carbon environmentally friendly fertiliser.
