Foundation helping local youngsters achieve their potential

The Sirius Minerals Foundation has launched a £50,000 fund to support talented youngsters in the local area achieve their potential.

Grants of up to £1,500 are available for organisations to help children and young people who demonstrate exceptional skill in their chosen subject or activity, but face barriers to reaching their potential due to lack of funding.

The Foundation can support talented youngsters who usually live in Redcar and Cleveland Borough, Scarborough Borough or the North York Moors National Park.

Examples could include competition fees, transport or accommodation costs, specialist coaching or tuition, exam or qualification fees or essential equipment or clothing.

“We know that there is a wealth of talent amongst the young people in our area, but sometimes they have financial barriers stopping them from making the most of those talents,” said Foundation Chairman Ian Swales.

“We want to help talented young people in our area to progress in their specialist subject or activity and reach their full potential.”

About Sirius Minerals Foundation:

The Foundation has been established to distribute funds to local community projects, which can range from bursaries, scholarships or skills training to improving public spaces and facilities, environmental initiatives and community building projects. The articles of association define the area of benefit as within the North York Moors National Park and the boroughs of Scarborough and Redcar & Cleveland. A small proportion of annual funds may also be deployed outside the area of benefit, provided the Foundation’s objectives are still met.

The charitable objectives of the Foundation are to:

  • Advance education, including supporting projects and training that benefit people by enhancing their skills;
  • Promote the general health of the community;
  • Advance environmental protection and improvement including the enhancing of the local landscape;
  • Provide and improve facilities in the interests of social welfare and leisure time with the aim to improve residents' well-being;
  • Help gain skills to those in need, because of financial hardship by being out-of-work, particularly the long-term unemployed.
