The charitable foundation funded by Anglo American, the owners of Woodsmith Project being constructed near Whitby and in Teesside, will benefit from a further donation of £1million to be invested in community projects on the North Yorkshire coast and moor.
Previously known as the Sirius Minerals Foundation, the renamed Woodsmith Foundation was set up to bring wider community benefits in addition to the positive economic impact of the mine. It has supported community projects in Redcar and Cleveland Borough, Scarborough Borough and the North York Moors National Park to the tune of over £1.5million since 2017.
Anglo American pledged a four-year £4m funding package when it bought the mine in March 2020. Longer term, it will be funded by percentage of mine revenue, which is expected to amount to several million pounds per year.
Chief Executive Leah Swain said: “The ongoing support from Anglo American is critical for the Foundation and allows us to continue supporting community groups, community buildings, sports clubs, schools, and charities across the local area.”
“The Foundation has awarded over 300 grants since 2017 and this latest funding injection will allow us to support many more over the coming months and years.”
